While trying to install Red Hat 8 on a brand new hard drive I just installed in my current WinXP system, I encountered the following problem: after booting from the CD, pressing enter at the first installation screen to do a graphical install, a whole bunch of stuff rolls by on the screen... UNTIL I hit the "Partition Check" at which, this appears...
hda: hda1 hda2 <hda5>
hdb: unknown partition table
after that, nothing! nothing else happens. goes nowhere from here. can anyone tell me what the problem is, or how i can fix it?
thanks

you might want to go into the bios and make sure that it is properly recognizing the new harddrive

yeah, it's recognized. i can see it if i boot up Windows and check out the device manager. i just tried unhooking the new drive, and found that the installation will stall at the same point without it, just frozen at the partition check... i also tried it with REdHat 6.1, and i couldnt even get to the partition check for some reason... froze up just before that, while checking drivers for the drives i think? i installed on a crappy old system i had hanging out in my closet, and it worked fine, but on this one it just doesnt work

you might want to check redhat's ardware compatability list for everything in the system. also, make sure that the harddrives are configured correctly (master and slave, proper ide locations, jumpers)

ok, well everything is configured correctly, but i havent found my cdrom on RedHats hardware compatibility page... does this mean i should choose another version of Linux? i am just using REdHAt cuz it came with the book i bought... any suggestions would be very helpful
