I've got some problems with my linux on my laptop...

my laptop:
ThinkPad i Series 1200 1161 43G

Celeron 700MHz (256KB), 64MB RAM, 10.0GB HDD, 13.3 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 24x-10x CD-ROM

I've tried to install Red hat and mandrake 8.1
But the RH freezed during the instalation (three times then i gave up)
I finished the Mandrake instalation the third (or second) time.
But then the problems really started, i can't get my pcmia port working, Linux tells me that i havn't got any, but i thats a big fat lie. Naturally i started looking for a driver but i can't find any...

Then theres the other problems Mandrake is working really slow, and sometimes different applications crash' even X-kill doesn't work... wich leaves me with no other option than to reboot my computer. This is really anyoing.

Should i choose an another Linux version or what would you suggest?

(please explain as if I was a total newbie, as this is first time I've ever tried to use it)

thanks

Aaahh finaly i found some help...

IBM thinkpad i-1200 linux instalation (http://www.bioinf.uni-hannover.de/~mhothorn/i1200pic/node1.html)

As with the hardware it doesn't look quite the same as mine, but still i think it'll solve some of my problems... at least the problem with my pcmia port.
I guess i'll have to try it out with my nearest Linux "geek"... as i don't understand much of what the author describes on the this page...

Still I havn't got a clue why mandrake sometimes just stops as it is totaly frozen... could it be lack of ram?
It's just that my insurance doesn't count if i change any of my hardware, and i really don't want that...

You could try the IBM laptop links at www.linux-laptop.net for your laptop (or similar) model.

Is it only the pcmcia you are having problems with?

Regarding the slowness problem, did you create a swap partition and activate it? If not then things will crawl to a near standstill when you load an application of any great size.
