I just picked up a modem for my Mandrake 8.1 system, but it says at the time of the distros release, that it was not supported for some reason. :(

This is like the 5th modem I have bought for Linux.

The card is:

U.S. ROBOTICS
INTERNAL 56K V.90

Product Number: USR263095

I cant seem to find any drivers for this card, and may in fact actually be searching for the wrong ones. Please help.

Thanks!

have you tried over at www.linuxmodems.org to find out what type of modem it actually is? that would be the first place that i would start!

If you bought it new, and didn't pay about $90.00 for it, its a POS Winmodem. Take it back and get a real modem. US Robotics modems are good, but you have to get a true hardware modem like the Sportster line of external modems. I have also had very good luck with the Diamond Supra modems, and understand that Zoom is good. Just make sure it's not a Winmodem.

My parents use the same modem in Mandrake 8.2. Simply follow the NHF at (USR doesn't make a winmodem, at least this one isn't)

Man, i'm so dumb and frusterated. I am sick of buying modems and sound cards that dont work with Linux. I have only one machine to test it on, and not a big enough hard drive to dual boot with, so when I test the hardware out, win2000 has to go bye bye. Then probably after I spend like 3 hours installing linux, i'll run sndconfig, and it will say:

U.S. Robotics 56K V.90 Modem Not Supported.

It's so upsetting, really.

I just bought the modem as well as this mysterious sound card too, at a computer show. No refunds, no nothing. I dont have alot of money, so all I could afford was the $25 U.S. Robotics modem, and a $30 Crystal A-4280 sound card.

The people told me it could be used in Linux, but I just give up too easy.

I have been using Windows for years, and have been trying to enter your world for about three of them. I've spent over $100 worth of sound cards and modems, just to leave windows forever.

:(

BTW, I also picked up the Quake II Linux version (with all the expansion packs and stuff). I was looking forward to using that.

maybe if you tried upgrading to MDK 9 it would work ? that would have been the first i had done before getting new hardware.

I just bought Mandrake 8.1 just now. I can't download it or anything, so the only way for me to get new distros is to buy them off the shelf. :(

I could really cry right about now.

I've always wanted to have my own little "Linux Box".

I would play Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament 2003.

I might paint it, and paint Tux on it, or put my Tux beanie on it.

Linus Torvalds is my hero, but I can't use my hardware with Linux.

:(

post the results of this command.

cat /proc/pci

to this forum. I mentioned that my parents have the same modem, mandrake 8.2. I can't imagine it just appeared in 8.2 The command above will tell the tale. If you see an IRQ, an address and the words USRobotics in any block, odds are good that it will work.

I'll try out the command when I get back home from school.

Thanks for the info!

I'll see what it says.

This is going to take a few hours.

I reinstalled Windows 2000 with the modem, and it had no clue what it was. I finally got what I think is a driver for 2000, so if it is, I will run a dual boot (Win2k,Mandrake 8.1) system, until I can figure this modem problem out.

Cya later everyone!

I appreciate all the support I am getting! :P

Next time when you go shop for a modem get one by mandrake's supported hardware so you can ditch that ****ty winblows :)

Hey thanks for the list!

It seems that alot of modems wont work with linux.

Perhaps it is just the Mandrake distro? Probably not.

Don't know.

I will post the messages from the Konsole real soon

(if the command works)
