So I have Samba set up and running on my new RedHat 7.2 Linux box, and can see the system on my network on other Win systems. However, how can I authenticate so that I can connect to the Linux system and browse files/folders? Is there a way to prompt for login credentials when trying to connect, or can I open access to by LAN members?

Any help would be most appreciated.

If you are using Gnome then you can open your home directory icon and type in smb:

From command line one needs to mount the file. I think it's smbclient //server/share.

I could be wrong about the command line becuase one has not accessed Samba shares from command line for quite sometime.

Forgive me, since I'm new to this, but where is my home directory icon in Gnome, and how do I open it to type "smb"?

Thx

Thanks. I did as you suggested, and from the command line
smbclient //server/share
gives an "added interface" message and then "Connection to server failed". I doublechecked, and started Samba, but still got the error. Any ideas?

Did you add a samba user and password? What kind of windows are you running?
