Hey gang, I'm new here on the Linux PPC forum and somewhat new to Linux. The only reason I say somewhat, is that I have only dabbled a lil' with RH 7.2 for x86 (and my wife got mad for installing a "free OS" on her PC :D ). So, after a day and a half of d/loading YDL 2.3 (Dayton) via Dial-up, I finaly have installed YDL. Here's the situation, and then I'll follow with specs, just in case someone can find where/why this problem is happening.

I have a Radeon PCI -> Mitsubishi 91TXM (19") and no matter what resolution(s) I try from ' /usr/lib/yi/dexter.py ' , I only get the left half of the screen showing KDE starting up. When I've tried the "failsafe" (generic VGA I'm assuming), it will fail to write the X-Config-4 file. So, here goes:

PPC 9500 (w/XLR-G3/500)
288MB-RAM,
SCSI Bus 1 (internal)
ID 0 = Mac OS (terminated, where BootX is installed) 2GB
ID 1 = 4GB (used for temp. storage)
ID 3 = CDROM

Ext Bus not in useBus 2 (thru Adaptec 2930 in PCI Slot A1)
ID 0 = ( term.) 9GB Barracuda
ID 1 = (Sole Linux Drive, is this bad?) 9GB Cheetah
ID 2 = 9GB Deskstar

Slot D1 = ATI Radeon PCI. Note, the monitor is attached to the Radeon via a VGA x 5BNC cable, might this be my problem???

Any/all help appreciated.

TIA
Bill

chech here http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/hardware/breakdown/displays.shtml

the link to sourceforge also provided me with some good info but in the end I emailed yellowdog and the helped me get the display right, though it took a lot of trial and error...

good luck!

OH, and tell the wife it's worth the added effort:D

unfortuantly, via the link(s, I went to the sourceforge link, BUT->) I really didn't get my question answered.
Now, any YDL 2.3 users, I have a couple of questions;

When you run the /usr/lib/yi/dexter.py, which file is written??
eg- XF86Config-4, or XF86Config-4.yi-save?

I've looked at both of them, and they both DO NOT list my Monitor (Generic SVGA) definition OR my Device (fbdev) Definition.

When I run usr/lib/yi/dexter.py it finds (I won't say it selects) my "/bandit/ATYRage6p" and my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 91TXM (TFW910S) but sets neither to "whichever of the above" XF86Config files.
As the link via sourceforge, there's definitions for every ATI Rage variant, EXCEPT the PCI Radeon.

So, my next question, does anyone know what the driver for the PCI Radeon is???

TIA

I had the same problem on the weekend.

I installed RH8 on my system, I have an ATI Radeon 7200 with 32 mb ram.

Neways, during the install, it asked for my monitor. I have two cards (the radeon, and a chipset one) so I selected the Radeon, but I set the color depth to 24 bits.

When X started, my screen looked like a tie-die shirt, I could move the mouse, but no keyboard.

I deleted RH8 and reinstalled, this time with 16 bits. Works great now.
