I did a search of this sight and didn't see this tip listed. Sorry if it is a repeat.
For me, Mozilla always looked OK on upon initial install. I then load up the TT fonts and all hell breaks loose on the screen. Fonts get blotchy, substitution is in incorrect and Mozilla is literally painful to read for any length of time.
All I did was edit one line in the file /etc/mozilla/prefs.js. I edited the line that reads:
pref("font.antialias.min", 10)
to
pref("font.antialias.min", 18)
Did I lose antialiased fonts? Maybe, but I don't care. Mozilla looks as good or better than IE now. Substitution works properly and it is very readable.
