I have a reasonably new install of mdk 9.0, and am currently running KDE with iceWM window decoration. I wanted to try fluxbox, so I downloaded the latest tarball, but got lots of errors during the make (as well as some 'no's during the ./configure). So then I tried the mandrake rpm build, and got exactly the same errors.

What I really need to know I think, is if there's a way of finding out which dependencies an install wants, and which I have/don't have. I'm happy and capable enough to install packages via the Mandrake software manager, but I'm still too new to linux to figure this out by myself.

Can anyone help or offer some advice?

the errors should say what is missing. what errors do you get?

Well, I am trying to update icewm myself, and I found out the following: If you go to rpmfind.net, and choose an rpm to download, the page with it will mention (down below) what the rpm contains, AND all required dependencies.
I hope that answers your question.
