From an xterm, try the command "sawfish-ui". This should bring up the panel that allows all preferences to be set. If not, there will be error messages that may clue you as to what's happened. There is also "sawfish-capplet", as a command.

Man, if u were standin' right next to me, I would shake your hand. THANKS!!!!
I've had this problem since like July.
But, so I understand, what does sawfish-ui do and why did that applet fail?
thanks

sawfish-ui is the xterm interface to the setups. The "ui" is user interface. That "stuff" that gnome, and other applets do, is, generally, a GUI "face" put on top of sawfish-ui. No need to write it all again, that's just called behind your back, and presented in a different way. Gnome uses a crossed wrench and a screwdriver as the tool icon. Is that what's failing? If so, how exactly?

Honestly, I'm not sure.
I know if I go thru the control panel for Gnome and try this, the 'applet always fails'.
Also, sometimes my screensaver fails as well.
Is there a log that I can go to and get more info. on this?
thanks again
