I'm seriously considering creating a super lightweight, object oriented window manager, desktop and widget set that would look something like this:

http://www.sebit.com/wm_concept.gif

It would leverage as much X toolkit functionality (including the Xt options) as possible so it could be small and efficient.

Please don't get too caught up in the colors I selected (this would, of course, be user configurable), but I would like opinions.

that kindof looks like twm :-)

but really, I would suggest using fluxbox. It's almost as bare-bones as twm, but is much more useable. The app-bar (right click) is really easy to configure so that you only have what you need on it, and it has an extremely small foot print on your system.

basically, FLUXBOX is the way to go.

EDIT:

ooh shute... I just read your post again, and you want to create one?

What you have up there looks pretty nice.

The only thing I would suggest for the whole project is to keep it simple, clean, and not have a bunch of extra wm-specific programs hauled along with it.

I'd say stick with the fluxbox/blackbox/twm template. Let me know if you need any testers... I'd be happy to try it out when you get it rolli'n

good luck

The design is heavily influenced by Windows CE 3.0 as well as twm. I actually like twm; it appeals to me in a minimalist sort of way. :)

Actually, I shouldn't have said "desktop". I'm thinking just a WM with a root menu. Maybe later a task-bar style app as well.

I agree with you 100% TWM is great!!!

TWM is my favorite WM and everyone is always like why and i am like it is just cool and it appeals to me because of it's minimalism and then they give me a weird look like i am demented and walk away terrified.... I seriously think the development on TWM should be restarted it could be great... maybe i will learn howto program and do it....

I'm not being critical at all, really just curious.

Why?

What functionality would your proposed WM have over TWM?

if its for the sake of programming a WM; that I understand entirely ;)

no real improvements just making it faster and maybe and support for skinning etc...
