I just compiled and installed fluxbox for RH 8.0 but it REALLY SLOW and EATS THE CPU TIME. For example when I change the theme it takes 4-5 seconds to change a theme (no big jpg or anything) and my cpu time is at 99%-100% according to gkrellm. Booting the WM is worse, it take 6-8 seconds to load... What the hell is that about? In RH 7.3 it didn't do any stuff like this... How do I fix this?

PS Wasnt g++ 3.2 supposed to make programs FASTER? Once again a big FU to RedHat for making Linux just that much more like windows.

Ok so I have been looking around and it looks like the slowdown is because of xfs... huh? Oh and how do I do xinitrc under RH8.0 they took that out too.

xfs has been in there since a least rh 6 ?
so unless they put a million fonts in there or something?
you can prob still do what you need with a .Xclients file
for the init.
I haven't looked a rh 8 though but i just an't imagine they
took away the basic stuff
they just hide it in there to
as you said copy WinWoes but more bloated
like it's a twisted contest........
read startx
that will show you where the rest of the init stuff is

Use Gentoo, takes .2 seconds for me to switch themes, no CPU useage, things run really fast, Gentoo is atleast 2 times faster than Windows speed wise. Oh ya I'm on a P3 700mhz with 192MB ram, so imagine what those high end systems might be getting?

did I hear you say flux is slow? ;-)

that sounds really wierd. Are you booting to runlevel 5? if so, try booting to 3, and then you don't have to deal with xfs or anything like that....

If you don't like R.H. (I feel the same way), you should look into building a LFS. I have flux running on my box, and it starts up in a snap! (not to mention everything else I have runs much faster than on some bloated distro)

LFS and Gentoo are great distros but I really do not have the patience to compile my whole system from scratch on my 400mhz machine... I really do not understand Gentoo, what serious advantages could there be to compiling everything on your own system the x86 asm code has not changed that much from the 586 and on any newer chip what is a few optimization going to matter anyway???

As soon as Gentoo is good enough so as to require "emerge system" as the only command I am sticking with pre-compiled distros. I believe Slackware has a better model for the lean mean distro.

yeah, slack's good.

Anywase, you ever get that flux running well? I'm interested in the solution to this one.

I built my LFS on 500 mhz, and it really doesn't take too long. just do a set of commands (copy & past), go do something for a while, and come back.

Anywase, good luck w/ your problem

It has something to do with the fact that xft is modified for antialiased fonts... I have no more information then that. I am using waimea from waimea.org now. :)

Damnit, just when I was having my fluxbox as I liked it. I just thought this was how it were, but I feel I'm not getting "enough" of what I can get.

Guess it's time for another Distro install, again :hmm:

What would be a relatively easy distro to set up and use? (I've used Mandrake and Redhat so far)

Ya thats what I hate about Linux, until you have it tweaked just perfect you are never satisfied. You need it to be just right... but it never turns out that why huh...

thats when you know its time to be productive with your linux install, ie. making open source apps/games to better the community and bring more windows users over :]

I use Slackware... There's a little more hand-tuning than RH or Mandrake, but the install really makes a lot of sense... It doesn't configure X for you though, you have to run some other program to do that once you've got it installed.

Of course, there are those who like Debian, you might try that too...

Source distros... Feh. No. Mortals shouldn't dabble in such things. (Actually, I just don't have the guts. I might give it a shot over Christmas break.)

Why not try updating your copy of Fluxbox? 0.1.13 is out now, including Anti-Alias support 'n' stuff. Although check out the stuff about installing with OpenOffice on another thread, just so you don't b0rk it.

I have the exact same problem. When I first installed Red Hat 8 yesterday I noticed it's slower than Windows 98, so I installed fluxbox because everyone is saying it's fast. But it's even slower! It takes about 20 seconds for it to load! My computer isn't new (PII300, 192MB), but there has to be a way to get a fast linux with GUI on this box!

So how do I speed up fluxbox? I didn't understand much from the other posts, so super-newbie instructions would be nice :)
