In my root account, I've suddenly lost the ability to minimize a window to the taskbar ( nothing shows up on the taskbar, but the task is still going nonetheless ). This includes ALL windows--Konquerer, Mozilla, Xmms, etc.. any clues as to what might have happened (or at least how to solve it)?

I've done it plenty. Of course, these days when I need root access, I just open a terminal and type "su".
But your problem is, I think, that you probably accidentally removed the taskbar applet in KDE. You can access your minimized apps by alt-Tab to switch between them. You can also right click on the taskbar, sellect Add, sellect Applet, select Taskbar to bring back the normal appearnce of minimized apps.
I remember the 1st time I ever ran KDE as root... somehow I completely removed the kicker from the bottom of the screen and couldn't figure out how to get it back! And, as always, people simply replied "Don't run X as root" as if it's destructive (it can be, but not if you know what your doing).
