I have Red Hat Linux 8.0 and i am completely new to linux. I have a small list of questions i need to know.
1.) How do i make linux automatically mount a partition when i log on?
2.) How do i setup a small workgroup network wich must be able to share files and interact with Windows pc's? (with a static IP)
3.) Are there any Ati Radeon 9700 video drivers and if so where can i find them
4.) Is there any support for Hughes' one way DirecWay one way system and/or the two way system(this is the only form of high speed internet for those who don't live very close to a city and cant' affor a T-line)

Mounting - Edit the file /etc/fstab and remove the option 'noauto' under the options column. It would be wise to keep removable storage at 'noauto', though.

Network - Install Samba with Windows computers. If they are other Unix machines, just set up NFS exports. I don't know the details, but its not too hard.

ATI - Save yourself the trouble, and get an nVidia card. ATI may have drivers, so check their website. Otherwise, get an nVidia card or live without 3D acceleration.

Satellite - You can probably set it up, but I don't know exactly. Go check out www.tldp.org and check out the RH config tools.

I'm sure if ATI haven't released drivers themselves that somebody has hacked one together for general comsumption. Go to http://www.google.com/linux and search for
ATI driver.

ATI site has drivers for the radeon 8500 but for something else check

http://dri.sourceforge.net

be VERY careful with whatever they offer as it probably won't work the first time and has forced many a reinstall. good learning experience though and, who knows, maybe you can get the drivers to work. I for one am convinced that DRI is run by an evil group of programmers whose free time is spent finding ways to get people to render their X11 unusable. i go without 3D for now.

2) i installed samba but i don't know how to start it

You need to download TkSmb it's graphical samba client program it's very simple but works (of course there are more these programs, but i use that because it was only one that works for me, and because i'm hopeless newbie).

The best place to find ATI drivers is rageunderground.com I have an ATI card too. They make good cards, but their drivers are worthless. I think buying another card would defeat part of the reason to switch over to linux (keeping cost down). Besides, the 9700 is not cheap; get your money's worth out of it :-).

As far as starting samba, what you may want to do is type these two commands every time you start your linux box:

/usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D
/usr/local/samba/bin/nmbd -D

The '/usr/local...' location is the default location. If you installed samba somewhere else (I'm assuming you didn't because if you know how to install it in another place, you'd know how to start it :-) ), use that location instead. There are several ways to 'autostart' samba, but I think you should start off with this first. As you learn to use Samba more, you will discover how to 'autostart' it and do it in a way to your liking.

I hope this helps some,
