I have read several files and read me on uninstalling linux but still cant get the hang of getting rid of LILO. the last time, one day ago, cost me a compleat reformat of my system. can sombody tell me the CORRECT way to get rid of the boot loader with out trashing my system. I am running a windows/linux system with windows fat 32/ mandrake 8.2 on seperate partitions. windows 98. I just realized i put this in the hardware form. sorry bout that.

I am to courious. I look at and open everything. I dont let any folder stay closed. Therefore i open folders and dir. i should not sometimes. I just installed a conexant driver for my winmodem and got it up and dialing. I had to unplug my modem and let linux detect it to make it work, when i did i changed a setting and could not change it back. No one could help me, so i had to reinstall linux to get the problem fixed. (should have come here) but i could not remove LILO and wound up locking me out of the whole system. Not the smartest thing i ever did, but learned to ask before i uninstall again. I want to keep linux but just want to know the right way to take it out next time so i can save the reformat time. lol

If you type 'man lilo' (without the quotes) it tells you an uninstall can be accomplished using (as root):

/sbin/lilo -u

Make Win98 boot floppy...... (boot from it)... At prompt type fdisk /mbr
to rewrite the master boot record of the primary drive (without altering the partition contents). Or you can fdisk /cmbr [drive#] to rewrite the master boot record of [drive#].
Also if you are in linux, try lilo -U to remove lilo from your MBR.

I don't use lilo because of the problems I have had with it. this might not be the best way but I would just use partition magic and take it out and then change the partition to fat32.that should do the trick.:D

as a matter of fact. i used partition magic to create my linux partition. And its the same tool i used to del it and blow my drive. I should have made it fat32 also? ok ill try that next time. and i tried the lilo -u and had problems with reabooting and getting
LI_ and then nothing. I dont like LILO much but dont know how to get rid of it. can i use something other that lilo?

the only time that I had to take lilo out I just put grub over it and have been using grub ever scince. but if I remember rightly I ended up reinstalling linux when I did that

To remove lilo or grub or any other bootloader installed into the master boot record, use a windows 98 startup floppy and command fdisk /mbr at the prompt.
