Since y'all were so helpful last time--I got jsdk in with no prob because of y'all THANKS!--now I have a new issue with my SBLive!. I've been running redHat 8.0 for about 2 weeks now with no sound. When I goto system settings/sound card detection, my SBLive is there, but there's test sound is negative for sound. So I've been to the NHF that DIRECTLY pertains to my sound card. I got emu10k1 in and found out it already exists in: /lib/modules/2.4.18-17.8.0/kernel/drivers/sound/emu10k1
even the emu10k1.o file is in that one. It also appears in what I believe is the old kernel (that got upgraded on day 1 through the RHN).
Anyway, I decided to proceed with the NHF instructions, I only got so far. I ran into: [jgardner@jgardner emu10k1]$ make
make: *** No rule to make target `n', needed by `DEBUG'. Stop.
[jgardner@jgardner emu10k1]$
The preceding "make" commands (from NHF) failed also.
Does anybody have any ideas on what's wrong, or how I can get my sound on? Do I need to open my case and see which PCI slot it's in?
(Sorry for the easy question. As I progress, they'll get harder.)
Thanks!

did you run sndconfig? to do this go to a terminal window & type in sndcong & press ENTER this utility should try to autodectect your card & load the correct modules for it. you need to be a root user to run sndconfig. just use the su command to gain root access for this session. ( 1.type in su then your root password 2. then run sndconfig @ the next prompt )

if soundconfig is not installed you can use the package manger to install it from your RH CD"s if I remeber correctley it should be under the sound and video section of the avalible packages.
I have a SB audigy card & it works fine iwith RH8 I belive the audigy & live use the same driver (emu10k1) so you should be set
if sound config does not find the drivers & or mouldes for your card you may need to download & install the driver yourself

hope that helps

I don't have that command sndconfig. It's not in the manpages either. I'm researching what you offered, though. Thanks!

No such command in there either.
Thanks for the post!
Geez! I can't wait until I need my USB ports! That'll probably make this look like a weekend in Paris!! Still no luck with my research on what's going on, either. The README in emu10k1 gives instructions that my terminal won't take. On the bright side, I used EMACS to edit a file. Wooh! Gettin' out there!!

I just don't give up easily. In my hardware browser, I found out that a number of devices aren't working, or aren't being detected. How do I set this up?
For example, it says:

Manufacturer: Creative Labs
Driver: emu10k1
Device: N/A

It's not detecting my USB ports or the NVIDIA stuff.
Maybe I can find out what's going on by using Nvidia as a search word.....Talking to myself again. That's a bad sign. If someone out there is familiar with Red Hat 8.0, I sure would appreciate a little help.
Thanks!!

All the latest distros/versions fully support the SB Live without you needing to compile the emu10k1 module yourself.

Have you tried loading the module?

modprobe emu10k1

If you receive any errors, I would suggest you first check all your bios settings (including PnP OS again).

If that fails, try moving the SB Live to another slot.
