Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Scanners that last
I'm tired of scanners that last for a year or two then begin putting vertical stripes, green and yellow, up and down all my color scans. Black and white works just fine, even in photo mode. I'm assuming that it is due to the bulb but since the cost of diagnosis is often more that I paid for the scanner I haven't actually had them looked at. On some other BBS some person said that HP does not even sell replacement bulbs, another said that they cost as much as the scanner.
This has happened to a UMax Astra1300(?) and an HP 3300c. Does anybody make a scanner that lasts or can be cheaply fixed?
Should I attempt to get the 3300c working under RedHat 8.0 or can I buy a more Linux friendly scanner that will last longer?
Those dull thuds you hear is just me banging my head against the scanner glass.

Ive been using the Canon Canoscan 600U for quite a while now and have had no troubles. It is however, connected to a windoze machine. Not sure if its compatible with a real OS.:D

/dev/random is actually a rant/opinion/off topic forum.
Was your question intended to be posted in a Linux help forum?
I'll move it to the 'Hardware Support' forum in hopes of someone being able to offer you suggestions.

Epson 640u perfection - under Linux is exactly as the name suggests. Most Epsons work well under Linux.

Actually, no. I ENJOY :D pounding my head against the scanner glass. I had intended to vent off some frustration on short lived scanners and not being able to purchase simple repair parts. I had intended to just rant about the expliteve deleted UMAX and hp, but being a nice guy I guess I lost my nerve . Maybe I should join a 12-step group: "Hi, my name is Davo and I'm too nice to post a rant."
Thanks for the help. Now I'm off to CompUSA for a DMA cable so I guess I'll price Canoscan and Epson scanners while I'm there.
Carlywarly, how long have you been using your Epson? How long do they last?

PS Am I the only one who finds scanners short lived?

Mine's just over 2 years old, now. It has had a lot of use and has never given any cause for concern. In the UK it was £50, about $80 I think, but all hardware is much cheaper now.
Before that I had a Mustek Win-only scanner that lasted for 5 years until I gave it to a friend. It still works.
