i have a strange, irritating problem with my soundcard (intel 810 chipset on dell inspiron 4100) and mandrake 9.0

it's kinda okay, but kinda not ...

when I log into KDE, great, aRts runs I get sound, cool.

i run tuxracer from within KDE and i get no sound. odd.

i run tuxracer from gnome i get sound but no 3D acceleration. odd.

if, in KDE, i launch harddrake thang and reconfigure the soundcard (without actually making any changes) then tuxracer will have sound in that session.

what the hell is going on? this is so inconsistent! BTW, when the sound isn't working for tuxracer under KDE, if i launch it from a terminal it shows /dev/dsp as busy. odd.

is it something to do with devfs, what is that all about?!

it seems to me that some portion of soundserver isn't starting under KDE (no other games have sound either, but XMMS is okay when I play mp3's). odd.

as for the no 3D accel under gnome, if I lower the res then I do get 3D accel. but I mostly use KDE anyway, which copes with the 3D accel, so i'm not too worried about that.

i'm slowly going mad and considering re-installing redhat, but then I remember all the mdk rpms, urpmi and rpm apt-get ..... gah! maybe I should just go back to 'doze. please don't let me do it!!!! i'm sure the answer to my problem is something easy ...

BTW if i (install) and run sndconfig under mdk9 it flakes out when doing the insmod (i'm guessing it doesn't find the right modules where it expects), so that was a dead end too.

help! thanks!

I know this won't help you with your problem..but just wanted to let you know I have similar on/off sound working problems on a desktop running MDK 9, and a new notebook running RH 8.

Sometimes boot up and no sound so I go in to reset it and it's fine. Seems to get lost at random times.
It's not enough of a problem to make me lose faith in Linux though.

well, i managed to sucessfully run sndconfig in single user mode, but hasn't helped.

it seems the problem is the 'artswrapper' part of the artsd sound server in kde, is hogging the sound device. if i suspend the artsd then it tells me that 'legacy applications can now use the soundcard' and stuff like tuxracer can then use sound.

odd. but bearable, cos at least i sort of know what's going on now.

linux still rocks ;-)
