Hi,

I hope that someone can help me. Many people are suggesting different things, but they refer to different versions and I don't know how to do what they're suggesting. Suse support aren't saying anything to my support email! Basically I'd just like to get my USB keyboard working.

I'm a newbie - if you haven't guessed - but not to PC's or Windows (NT 9x XP) or even DOS or CP/M! I thought it was about time I tried something new and see what all the fuss with Linux was all about.

My Hardware
Compaq Presario 5146EA
USB Keyboard
Conexant HSF PCI Modem (a WINmodem I believe which Linux hates!)
Epson PhotoStylus 895 USB
Canon BJC 1000 Parallel
HP ScanJet 3400c USB

I have reinstalled Suse for the 2nd time using a borrowed PS2 KBD hoping that when I plug in the USB KBD it would work...... no, no! It hangs booting hotplug services pci net usb..

I've come across something that says I have to enable HID support. How and where do I do this?

Then there's the modem..........arghhhh!!!!!

So my 1st experience of Linux isn't that happy. If someone could help me out I'd be very grateful as I don't want to give up (thinks back to my ZX81 days!) Remember, I'm a complete Linux newbie - full directions would be helpful

Thanks.

Try this link, USB Human Interface Device (HID) (http://www.linux.usb.org/USB-guide/x194.html) . Good Luck

Try http://www.linux-usb.org/USB-guide/book1.html instead.

I've seen the Conexant HSF modem posted here quite often.

Try a forum search here at LNO, www.linmodems.org or search for Conexant at freshmeat.net as you should find where to find the Linux drivers and tutorials on how to install.

Thanks guys, but it's still beyond my current Linux capabilities, so I took another approach - see if Mandrake 9.0 recognises it.

Well to my surprise it did - and my USB printer - scanner (although the message said Mandrake doesn't support the HP ScanJet 3400c - any help here?!?!?). So I'm gonna have a play with this flavour of Linux.

Now back to the Winmodem.........................
