I recently installed Yellow Dog 2.3 and am having two problems.

First, the only way I could get linux to correctly install on my iMac was to create a fail-safe display profile. However, the low resolution and lack of color depth make my scrren not look too good. I think I am only at 8-bit color right now. Is there any way I can change my resolution and color depth and still get linux to boot successfully?

Second, I have started to install programs in linux and have run into many binary files. How do I install these? When I try to install them in the command line, it says that it can't execute binaries.

Two questions...

Which iMac do you have (1st gen w/ CRT, or 2nd gen w/ flat panel)?

Are you using RPM's to install the programs, or tarballs, or what?

I have an iMac DV 400. I have gotten the colors to look better, but my on screen fonts still don't look great.

The font issue:

Have you looked at this?...

If you do a Google search (in the Linux channel) for TrueType fonts, you'll find lots more links for potential fixes.

Running executables:

Not all Linux applications will run on a Linux system built for PPC. I would suggest that you get the source of the apps you'd like to use, and compile them on the iMac (still might not work though :( ).
