Mount points are kinda like drives in Windows. You can get a good idea of what they are here: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/Installation/How_to_Create_a_Multiple_Partition_System.html

A mount point is a directory listing on your filesystem where you can mount various things like a cdrom, a drive, an iso and probably other things I can't think of offhand.
It's sort of like a folder in Windows but it's much more flexable.
Everything in Linux (processes, devices, program files, drive partitions, etc) mounts on the root filesystem /
See my sig for good tutorials/guides to how Linux works.

For a hard copy manual on Linux, Running Linux (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/runux3/) is hard to beat.
