Please bare with me on this.....

My school has Linux and upgraded to redhat8 and I thought "Nice and stable system, time to have a look myself). I downloaded redhat8.

Hard Drive is split into 4 partitions in this order....

C (windows) -- Boot Part -- Linux -- D (windows also)

Whenever I boot GRUB pops up asking what OS I want. If I choose Dos (for windows ME) it just restarts my machine and loads up Grub again. Slightly annoying :)

Now I did notice a strange thing when I was installing.....

I had already used partition magic in windows to setup the partitioning for linux. When it came to redhat partitioning bit I couldnt auto so used Druid. It recommended that I use a swap partition so I said yes but then my Windows D drive became C and my orignal C drive with windows has no letter next to it.

Anyone got any ideas whats up and how I might be able to correct this?

Could you please post the contents of your Grub configuration file? Mine is /boot/grub/menu.lst while some distros use grub.conf.

Also (if you can) post the partitions you have. hda1- win, hda2- linux boot etc.

Thanks for the reply.

I've solved my problem but I know I'm going to run into it again when I re-install.

I ran Dos version of Partition Magic and noticed that my C drive (The one with winblows) said "HiddenFat32".

I'm certain this happened when I said yes to the recommended Swap File Partition.

I placed the swap file partition after C drive and before Linux Drive so my HD looked like C - Swap - Linux - D. The D drive was also Winblows (Has all my downloads).

Do I really need the swap file drive setup or can it run well without it?

I don't care how much hassle Linux throws at me I'm going to learn it if it kills me :)

Well, I have fixed it.

This time around I just had 1 big drive with winblows it and then used Druid to do what it wanted to do. Once Redhat had been installed I booted up winblows and then split that drive into 2 (which is what I wanted, partition with winblows and a 2nd for downloads).

Now everything is running super smooth.

Stand by for 1/2 a million questions now I have linux running hehehe.

I'm rather certain that you need a swap partition.

Yup, still got that, druid did everything it needed to do and Winblows didn't ***** about it ;)
