Hey, I have a question that hopefully someone can answer, but I could not find any answers by searching. I run a Dell 530 workstation and I use the digital out from my video card to a flat panel monitor. When I made this switch awhile ago, it prevented me from using my linux install because I never configured X to use the digital port. No biggie, had to take some time off linux anyways.

Well I now Im back and I'm trying to install Red Hat 8.0. I have installed it before, but never on this machine. I boot from CD, run the installer, it does the CD check then proceeds to load anaconda. In the load sequence for anaconda (RedHat Installer) it probes the monitor and cannot detect it, then the installer proceeds to load its graphical mode, and BOOM, my display is gone, the monitor goes into power-save mode and says it is not getting any video info from the card. I know the card works, and I suspect its because I am using the digital output cable. Is there any work around for this problem. I like the Digi Out b/c it is much sharper in Windows and I would like to keep it.

I had thought to try installing with the analog cable and then looking for an option to swtich, but I was not sure I could even do that once in Linux. Could someone please help me out with this problem, I'm excited to finally have some time to move more stuff to Linux and I just need it to install!! Thanks..

...does the screen "switch off" as if you disconnected the cable from the computer?

Like I said, I don't know. I'd recommend that you check out the hardware RH compatibility list, and especially the XFree86.org site for any details on their drivers. I speculate that the install process doesn't have access to your monitor drivers. I wasn't even aware that Linux could handle flat panel screens, but then, I'm newbie.

I had the same problem and this is how I solved it:

-Choose Text install rather than Graphical

-At the end of the install it will ask you to configure X. From the Drop down menu select your monitor (if it's there) or you can manually select the refresh rates. This obviously assumes you check these values before you start the install. Good luck.
