I'm new to linux(mac at home:D and windows at work:(). I've been trying to install linux on my pc box at home for the last 3 days and i can't get it to work. Red Hat 8.0 freezes on me half way through the install. Mandrake 9.0 does the same the thing except once it said it installed but once it rebooted and i hit enter on the linux it brought up error in ext3. the hardware i have is a soyo sy-p4x400 Dragon ultra, a P4 2.4 533sb, WD 80 HD, and some crappy Pci VC a friend gave me i think it came out of a compaq.

Just a few suggestions: how about trying Slack 8.1? I have used that for a while but am now (literally, CD is downloading) taking steps to try Gentoo. Slackware is very good though; I'm just one of those people who can't stay in the same place too long. Also, I don't know this for sure, but is it possible RH 8.0 isn't full release yet? RH users will need to confirm or refute that one; if it is try 7.3.
Oh, and last thing, give ext2 a shot instead of ext3. It should work fine for a newbie's (or most people's for that matter) needs and I think it's more stable so it could cut you some slack with whatever is causing the problem with ext3.
Just some thoughts; use them at your own risk...;)
