Help!!
I am attempting to install Red Hat 8.0 for the first time. (never used Linux before...obviously) I downloaded the isos, burned them, and tested them too (md5checksum). They all tested fine.

During the actual install process I received this error message:
The file /mnt/sysimage/var/tmp/glibc - common - 2.2.93-5. i386.rpm cannot be opened. This is due to a missing file, a bad package, or bad media.

After this happened an unhandled exception occurred. Any help would be much appreciated!

Could you please include a description of the hardware you are attempting to install Redhat 8.0 on?

Are you quite certain the md5sum's were correct and the cd's were burned properly?

I was attempting the install on a Pent2 233mhz older HP Vectra with a 2.5 gig HD. I made 3 attempts without changing my installation settings and then on the fourth I changed the format all partitions to just the linux partition and it installed perfectly fine. I haven't checked the hard drive yet, but I am assuming it previously formatted on the other install attempts.

I have another question (maybe I should repost). I'm on the install CD screen and I'm not sure what or if I need to install the cds or which ones. I downloaded the isos and have 3 options on the screen currently 1)Documentation 2)Installation 3)additional
I know disc 3 has RPMs on it. Do I need to install those and if so would they be under additional? And what about discs 4 and 5? Any help would be much appreciated. I'm anxious to begin using the OS.

Any of our Redhat users know the answer?

Unless a Redhat user (I'm not) can help with your question, I can only really suggest you try the online documentation on RH's site and/or the docs on the installation cd(s).

Did you allow RedHat 8 to run the media check? while the CDs may physically and fielsystemly <-- made that word up) fine, the actual media could be corrupted. It is very unlikely, but you should allow the Red Hat installer to run the media check on all three Psyche CDs before running the install. Further than that, I am not sure.

In response to your CD question, I have never seen those 3 options so I assume you are running the text installer? I have only run the graphical installer (anaconda) for Red Hat 8.

But as for the discs: In a proper redhat mirror site, the 8.0 i386 folder will ahve 5 isos. The first three are the CDs required for the system install. Discs 4 and 5 contain the source code and require you to compile the OS yourself, something newbies like you and I will stay away from for a very long time. I don't know where they will be at, but I would imagine the RPMs would be part of the "Installation" section of the installer. Based on the division you gave, "additional" would imply something else. However, the RPMs are basically like .exe installers in windows. They can range from little programs, to the core of the Linux system. You will not need them all, but you will need the entire disc of them in order for the system to properly install.
