Hello everyone!

Just a quick question...
My wife is dead set on Windows XP ("It's pretty and I like it, that's why!"). I'm dead set against M$. So I'm going to put in another hard drive and run my Linux off it. I understand (through reading other posts) that WinXP and Linux may not get along due to two different file systems. Can I still install Linux on the "slave" drive, keep windows on the "master" drive and run a dual boot? I understand I'd have to install LILO or GRUB on my MRB (which would remain on the master drive with XP). Will it work?

So - a recap of my questions:

1) Can Linux be installed on a separate drive (slaved to the Win XP drive) and work fine.
2) Which boot loader should I use (GRUB or LILO)?

For the record I'm a new Linux user and will be installing RH8. I'd appreciate it if anyone with experience (and patience with newbies) could share!

Thanks a million!
Andy

This is not a problem what so ever, you can install linux on a different harddrive

just use like partition magic to make your ext2 partition (ur linux partition) and make a swap (2 x amount of ram)

Make sure that you install Windows first and then linux otherwise Windows will overrite ur bootloader.

As for the bootloader go with Lilo :)

hope this helps

I'll just start off by saying I'm knew to LINUX and this site is by far the most help a new user could want... Now...
I tried to install Mandrake 9 on a 2nd HD along with XP. XP worked but Mandrake did not... I tried a bit more tweaking but to no avail...
mad.. Rebooted with RH8 and things went VERY smooth!! I did use partition magic on the Mandrake load but decided to let RH do it on the second load. It recognized XP as DOS.... No problems!!

I believe if you first install winXP using FAT32 and not NTFS you should get it working ok.
I think Linux file system and NTFS don't play nice. I know XP and Linux can be on the same hard drive even, so long as it's on a FAT32 partition(WINXP) and linux is on its own filesystem(or FAT32, I believe you can run linux on FAT32 but its not as fast)
anywho, yes its possible as long as you don't format in NTFS.

P.S. Good luck
