Ok, now I know nothing about Linux, but I would like to dual boot linux on my Win98 box. What I want to know is first, what version of Linux would be the best to install on my box, which unfortunately is a Compaq Presario 5460, almost stock with a small RAM upgrade and a Geforce2 MX400, and then once I get the most compatable version (which *hopefully* would be newbie friendly) how do I go about installing it as a dual boot?

Quite the questions, I'll probably need quite a bit of help with the installation, I'm not as good with computers as I'd like to think I am ^_^;;

I would try Mandrake 8.2 or 9.0 and if you already have Win98 install, it will create a bootloader to use for dual booting. You may have to download nvidia drivers for your graphics card.

You didn't mention how much ram, but at least 32mb I hope. Check Linux hardware compatibility list for your hardware also.

Try ELX linux. It's great and you won't need any installation help.
