Ok, I have an on-board VIA 8233 audio chipset. I found the drivers on my motherboard CD, but how do I install them. I'm sorry for such a dumb question, but I searched the forums and it didn't help me with my problem. Could you tell me how to install audio drivers for my chipset if I have the files like sound.o ect..., there's no RPM and VIA's site didn't help =/. Thanks!

First, this is the programming forum, not really what I think you were looking for.

But anyway, you may not even need the drivers off your motherboard CD. I have the same motherboard (though I disabled the onboard sound card; my Yamaha PCI card works one heck of a lot better...) so I believe I've seen drivers for it before. I can look around some more if necessary.

Is there a problem with your RedHat-installed drivers? Installing anything Linux-related off your motherboard CDs isn't generally a good idea, since anything there is going to be hopelessly out of date...

Do the via686a (or whatever they are) drivers work?

I have a via8233a, which is only slightly different.

I suggest you go to viaarena.com and find the linux driver section. They have drivers and instructions, but only for common distros. (redhat included)

Also, the 0.9.whatever release of alsa should work with the 8233. I don't know if redhat has this or not; mandrake 8.2 only has the old 0.5.xxx version.
