Situation:
Laptop - DVD Drive won't boot Red Hat 8.0 Disk 1

Floppy drive is broken (not removable, so can not fix it)

Any way i can install RH on this computer? The DVD drive boots up WinXP/W2k disks just fine- current install is dual boot btwn W2k Server and WinXP. I used to have Mandrake on there too but got rid of it (it didnt like my video card). However, it would boot up with the DVD drive.

I dont know why Red Hat won't, but i tried to versions before 8.0 and they wouldn't either.

Help please, i really want linux on this laptop- gotta learn it

If the dvd will boot W2K/XP cd's, I don't see why the Linux cd's will not work.

Did you burn them yourself? Can you see a filesystem (files/directories) on the Redhat cd's?

Will your Mandrake cd still boot?

i dont understand why it won't either. seems to be only Red Hat CD's.

Mandrake CD's and Win CDs boot fine. Red Hat ones won't boot. I cant read them fine and just used them to install on an old desktop. So they work. Just don't like the DVD player in the Toshiba laptop.

Very frusterating.

Ideas??

Since you don't have a working floppy drive, I guess you are stuck with the dvd drive.

See if Redhat has anything on their site about others having similiar problems installing with dvd drives.

Try another distro/version...

its all set now guys...thanks

wasn't patient enough...after 10 minutes, the install kicked in. even though there was/is no CD activity light or sounds...

dumb on my part, but at least simple to get around..
