I was recently "gifted" with a complete P60 Computer.
It has 1 gig hd, 16 meg ram and a 1 meg video card.

Is there a linux distro out there that will run with it? Either a desktop distro to learn with or more likely, a firewall distro to protect my home network from the ravages of the outside world?

Debian or Slackware would run nicely on it :)

Well, can i use redhat packages with debian? My impression is that you can get the binary for any package and compile it for your linux distro? In this case, debian. Is that right?

You can get the source tarball for all most all packages then compile that into a binary for your system, but with Debian and RedHat they already have binary package built. If you use debian you use .deb packages, if you use slackware you use .tgz and if you use redhat you use .rpm
