Hi all,
Have just downloaded Mandrake 9.0 and have been tearing hair out trying to get the thing to work. Problem is this:
after choosing "linux" from LILO, I get the modules loading up and they're all [ OK ]. Now after they all finish and the thing is supposed to ask me to logon. The screen goes blank and my monitor is receiving no signal (light flashes).
I have a GeForce4 MX420 gfx card and having seen many topics on nV drivers looked at them. Unfortunately, I'm having a slighlt diff problem.
I just noticed I'm getting an error:
"PCI: 00.1f.1 resource collisions" (basically)
A friend told me this refers to my gfx card which would make a lot of sense, seeing as though I'm having video input problems.
How can I resolve this resource collisions. I cannot load linux or reach the console or anything.
Thanks in advance,
skinme

First time I've ever seen that error message.
All I can think of is for you to check in the bios to see if AGP is being assigned a IRQ.
Also disable PnP OS.
Did you tried installing again?

/me begins to worry when a reg with 19,000 odd posts ain't seen my problem before
Anyway, looked in BIOS. OS PnP was off, and only setting between AGP/PCI had no effect when I changed it (i.e. still same error).
Being a lil' more observant this time, I also saw this:
"Unknown bridge resource: assuming transparent" directly before the 00.f1.1 error.
(All I wanted to do was see how fantasic Linux is.... :( :D)
Thanks anyways
// Oh and I reinstalled (reformated, etc.) so many time I could practically code the damned installation routine :D

The "assuming transparent" message is harmless, but I've never seen the other either.
What happens when, at your bootloader, you type in whatever your linux installation is called (most of the time, that's "linux"), and then a space and the number three? So the whole line looks like "linux 3" or something similar.
It's possible you're having issues with the GeForce4 and the open-source driver for nVidia cards (but really, only if you chose a GeForce card during installation -- if you chose "VESA compatible" or whatever, then this probably isn't the problem -- still possible, though). If you can boot to runlevel 3 (this is what "linux 3" does), you can try logging in in text mode, and hopefully, installing nVidia's drivers will fix the problem.
Also, check the contents of /proc/pci (cat it) to see if you have any real conflicts, as well as /proc/interrupts.
Have you also tried waiting 30-40 seconds? It sounds like you have, but just making sure. The reason I ask is that some people at www.nvnews.net are having problems with GF4 MX cards and a long delay every time they start up X.
You might want to give this a try :

Hah!
Skinme my friend you have EXCATLY the same problem I have, your intel motherboard is causing problems and you probably also got a 845G/E/GL/MAX or something.
For I get the same error message as you do "PCI: 00.1f.1 resource collisions" when I start linux.
When I look in Harddrake I can see that most of the bridge stuff and ide on the motherboard doesn't have a module to load for it and says unknown.
So at least I know now that I'm not the only one with this problem, just hope we all can figure this one out.
Cheers.
Emile

You could try searching the kernel mailing list (available from www.kernel.org ) to see if other have had the same problem.
Post a question in the kernel mailing list if necessary.
Also contact Mandrake support. This is their latest release so I would think they would be glad to assist anyone that is having serious installation problems with Mandrake 9.0.

Unfortunately I downloaded it off their server, rather than buying it boxed. They only provide installation support for boxed versions. Where should I ask about this?

I would still contact Mandrake even if you didn't purchase the retail package.
Give them a try. Can't hurt.
