I have Mandrake 8.2, and although it mount by default the CD-RW/ DVD Rom (Toshiba) and read data CD's, it refuses to play music or DVD discs. i get error messages that I guess I'm just too new to fathom, and I can't find any of the suggested 'packages' that it tells me I need on the install CD's.....
The Mandrake update page looks like it may have a few useful things available, but they never download, always giving a 'bad' or corrupt file error before it'll even start downloading.
MP3's play just fine in XMMS and the KDE audio player, but neither of those, or 'CD Player' will work for CD playback, nor will that Xine thing, and that won't touch DVD playback, saying it too is missing some module that is SUPPOSED to have installed from the installation CD....
Any ideas? Help? In pigeonLinux/English please....all this console/Terminal stuff makes my head swim!!

Do you have the audio cable that goes between the cdrom and soundcard?
What are you using to play dvd's?

Throughout all of the Mandrake 8.2 CDs, all packages will reside in a directory on each CD, find the packages in those directories for whatever packages are missing. If the packages are not found, please post any error messages here!

1] IIRC, DVDs are not handled by XMMS. Try the program called 'Xine'. I'm new to DVDs myself, so I may not be accurate in saying the XMMS does not play DVD; however, I am certain that Xine does play DVDs.
2] XMMS needs to be configured to read audio CDs (to play audio CDs), by default, the XMMS configuration is to read mp3 files from the users home directory. To reconfigure XMMS to play CDs, either click on the main XMMS then type alt-P or use your mouse cursor and click the right-hand mouse button on the XMMS main window. somewhere in the 'Preferences' window which will popup, you will see a few lines of text surrounded by a box, select CD ant apply and close. That should make XMMS play CDs, if you haven't already found or tried that.

Xine will not (without messing around with some plugins maybe?) play encrypted DVD's - this means any DVD which is region specific will not play in Xine.
Use Ogle (you'll have to download it and install it yourself most likely) - I've found it to be quick and reliable, and on top of that it supports DVD menus which most don't.

I've found the navdvd pluging for Xine handles the menus very well...I can "experiance the full interactive world" off the second disk for Monsters, Inc at least :D
