I am VERY new to Linux...as in I have no pervious experience with it. All my previous PC have had all the various windows operating systems. However, i heard about the new release of RH 8.0 and it peaked my interest seeing as that I am still not fully satified with my copy of WinXP Pro. So two days ago, on a wim, I backed up my critical files and downloaded and installed RH 8.0.

Thus far I have to say I am pretty impressed with RH. However, two major problems are in the way of my complete migration to Linux. One....I have an Nvidia Geforce 4 card and RH does not seem to fully regognize this. Back on my windows machine I could set the color depth to 32 bits. However in my display settings, the highest depth possilble is 24, and when this option is setected my machine seems to disagree (as in when i rebot as is necessary for the change, RH cannot set this mode and it makes me change it back). While the video settings that RH has chosen for me do seem to work on some level...my video card is obviously not being used to its full potential...something I would like very much. Otherwise why the heck did I get a 3D card? I have checked out Nvidia's site and the only drivers they have seem to be for RH 7.3. Any help getting my card set up would be most appreciated....

My other problem lies in settng up my printer. I have an HP Deskjet k60, which connects through a USB cable. RH does not seem to recogize this either....and being a student having a fuctional printer is of the utmost importance to me...so if I can't get it to work my experiemce with Linux will be short lived to say the least.

Any help in either of these areas would be very nice of someone!!
Thanks!!

Bert

First, go to nVidia and download the drivers (tarballs, much easier) and install them per their instructions.

Second, 32-bit color is just 24-bit color with some trickery. If your screen can do 24 (and you set it as such), I think X automatically makes it do "32."

As for the printer, I don't know anything about what Red Hat uses, but I'm guessing HP has drivers for it.

My knowledge on Linux printing is very limited with USB printing being next to nothing.

Try

www.linuxprinting.org
and
www.linux-usb.org

To see if your printer is recognised, open a console and type in usbview as root. It will show you all devices connected.
