I have just installed Mandrake 9.0, and it works fine. I have some generic sound card (brand = Ensoniq). My VCR input is plugged into it so I can have audio when I watch TV.

Unfortunately, the sound still comes through when I don't want it to, and in fact as soon as I boot up Mandrake, the sound comes on. I don't want to turn off the speakers since I want to hear sounds from the computer, but I want the sound card to stop piping the sounds from the input. I don't want to pull the input wires, either, because every time I did want to listen to the audio, I'd have to crawl back under the computer to plug in the wires.

Is there some way to get the sound card to shut up? There doesn't seem to be a setting for that in the Mandrake Control Centre.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Put it in the slot furtherest from the cpu. Check the possibility of making a shield for it.

Have you tried adjusting the volumes or muting using the sound mixer?

Ah, okay, I finally found it. Seems like there are two volume controls in Gnome, and only one of them has the capability of controlling the various inputs and outputs of my sound card (the one under Harddrake). Presumably that's just a front end for some CLI command that I haven't gotten around to identifying yet.

I guess the default is that all the inputs are piped to the speaker outputs, so if you don't find the specific command to shut off certain inputs, then you have no choice but to have the output come out!

Thanks for the help.
