I got the idea from a thread I read in the software section. It basicly asked for a question, and on the same post it was edited to say it was solved, and changed the post title to 'Solved'. I was wondering.. think it would be productive if the thread owners could mark their threads as 'solved' (and it would show some kind of solved icon next to the thread)? If this could be done, it would be easy to tell apart which problems have been solved and which ones have not... of course, I guess some people will be too lazy to mark their thread as 'finished' once they solve their problem...

I was thinking of the same last week and thought about asking the admins if a checkbox could be added to the thread topic line that either the owner of the thread or the moderators could check off.
Certainly would make it easier and a little less time consuming for those answering quesions. Wouldn't have to review each thread to see if the problem has been solved.

I was just about to say this when I looked at this post... :). I believe we should have something like SOLVED for the title if its been solved or if its a long going problem which hasnt been solved in a while maybe it should be called PENDING: *title name*

like that UT demo problem? Or the soundcard in RH 8 problem?
While I may have solved a problem on my box, the solution that worked for me may not work for you, I like that the threads are open ended, a variety of problems may present themselves to various users on a single issue.
I realize the suggestion was not to "close" threads, but if I'm browsing the new posts and I se "SOLVED" I'm not going to open the thread to see if I can help. So what if its on the front page again because the solution didn't work for someone?
imho this would not be good.
the chances of getting people to add SOLVED to their threads' subjects is close to 0%.
it is a good idea but i bet people won't do it no matter how much people want it.

to be honest i would. i usually go back and check any post of mine that got solved and add , oh this is what happened. i would check solved if the option was there. And i hate to add more work but if the Mods see a solved thread maybe they could check the box if no one else does it.

I agree its a good idea in principle, but compliance may be an issue. I also tend to agree with bskahan that, if a thread got re-opened, it may cause confusion. My solution: give it a whirl and see what happens! (I do like it when someone posts a conclusion to a thread - when I've seen these and the thread has helped me, I add a thank you :) )

I usually acknoledge that I read the post so it wouldn't be any more work for me. It really annoys me when people don't tell weather or not my advice worked, makes me wonder if its worth my bothering to post. I really bugs me when someone responds with a uselless reply and only makes people assume it has been solved (I will grant I have done that on occasion)

I'm a newbie, and I do search before I ask. If there was a Solved icon or something, could I include "Solved" in my search field? A lot of times I do a search and fine lots of threads, but they haven't been solved... I usually can glean enough info to send me on my way, but restricting my search with "Solved" might be helpful.
