Hi I'm new to Linux and just wiped out a test system to load RH psyche. This is a KDE only problem.

I know that RH prefers Gnome but I prefer KDE. When I logout of my KDE I am only prompted to logout. KDE on RH7.x or other distros would give me a logout, shutdown, or restart option. How do I get this back?

Gnome on RH8 does this correctly but not KDE. To shut down this thing I've got to click logout, then click a contiune button, then hit session, then shutdown and then answer yes to the f***in' box that pops up after that. Arrrgh! Enough all ready! Just power off you stupid %*%@~! Anyway you get the idea. What was fairly simple is now quite anoying. I've tried to use the KDE control center to change this but it has no effect. Have I found a bluecurve bug or is this one of the "crippled KDE features" that caused one of the RH programers to leave the company in a big huff?

Thanks
Nathan Williams

This seems more like you have installed the system with the "server" option.

It happens on RH 7.x too. If you installed your system as the server option, to prevent unwanted shutdowns from X the shutdown option is taken out.

The rationale is this: If you're running a server, you probably don't want the user to shut down the box (including all the service like apache, ftp and what not along with it)

So it's more with the option I think.

I have no idea how to remedy that though - but I think that's the problem.

Well that makes no sence as I didn't set it up that way. I chose Personal workstation so I could play with Bluecurve. Also why doesn't this effect Gnome? It is the same way for Gnome in 7.3?

Have you looked around in the KDE Control Center to see if there is a option you can enable to display shutdown, restart etc.?

<snip:source=my orignal post>

"...I've tried to use the KDE control center to change this but it has no effect...."

</snip>

Been there done that. That is why I wonder if it is a bluecurve bug. If no one else can give me a clue I'll see what I can do to ask the guys at RedHat about it.

flav2000 post sounds like the best clue but I haven't done much to chase it down yet.

I haven't dove into the various config files yet. I'm still too new of a newbie to know WHICH files I need to look at.

Thanks,
Nathan Williams

You can always make yourself a small shell script that tells your computer to go to run level 0, place the icon on the desk top and then to shut down click the icon.
