I am just posting this message for anyone that might have the same problem I had. My sound card ESS Allegro (with maestro3) seemed to install correctly after I added a line in modules.conf ("alias sound_slot_0 maestro3") but when I ran xmms the sounds never stopped. I spent forever trying to reconfigure my sound card. All I had to do is goto xmms > options > preferences and switch to OSS Driver.
Also the sound configuration program does the same thing when it plays a test sound, I don't know how to fix it but if anyone has any ideas please let me know.
