I have a user account on my RH7.3 box that locks up every time a connection to the internet is established over ppp0.

Root can connect fine, though.

I haven't changed any settings, sooo.... any ideas?

And then it happened...

now Root locks up on connection, also.

So I boot up into Windows which promptly locks up as soon as the verification of username and password are complete.

I'm starting to think my modem is having issues.

Rebooted and logged into Windows again, seems to be working for the moment, but..

Anybody else even /heard/ of something like this taking place?

Since it's happening in both Windows and Linux you can pretty much rule out a software problem.
It could be the modem. It could also be a resource conflict with your serial port(or USB port if that's what you're using). Have you added anything new lately that might cause a conflict? Made any changes to the settings in your BIOS?
You can look in the Device Manager in Windows or take a look at the /proc/interrupts and /proc/ioports files in Linux to try and see any conflicts.

If it's a winmodem, it takes over the cpu, so if something if flakey, you get a lock up.

Real modems work better than using your cpu, so put that winmodem in the trash heap where it belongs.
