I have set up a server with Mandrake 9.0 and do not load XFree at boot time. After executing startx it begins to boot GNOME2 but freezes the load. The HD is still blinking but it just runs and runs. Not quite sure what is going on there. Beginning to think this is some kind of hardware conflict. Has anyone experienced this?

This may sound stupid. My Gnome was also "Freezing" last week because I had installed Debian and misconfigured my mouse. So the mouse was frozen not Gnome. This is basic, but took me a while to realize it :)

My mouse control seems fine. I see my watch icon, and i can move it around and it seems fine. All I get is the Gnome splash screen with no icons showing loading of service along the bottom of the splash screen. KDE works fine and all other services work fine, Gnome is it. Do you know what I could look at in Xfree concerning the mouse, just to double check??

I am real noob, I just go into things and read and do as it written. I am still a not very reliable source, sorry. A more experience LNO user would point you to a more certain direction in that matter, ask MDwatts maybe!

geckolabs,
I am experiencing the same thing for 2 days now. Kinda getting pissed@!...... here is my setup
Installed RH8 on a system. Here are the specs:
AMD-K7 600 on a KX-133 board.
640MB ram
1x 40Gb Maxtor IDE0:MASTER(Partitioned c:[win2000] and d:[docs])
1x 40Gb WD IDE0:SLAVE (partitioned e:[warez], swap:640mb, 10Gb:/)
RADEON 7500 64mb
Dual boot setup.
My system freezes while loading the Gnome splash screen also. + my mouse is locked. Now I will re-install for the 4 time now and select kde and see if that works right.
I'm all out of ideas.

npereira,
Huh, that is weird. Like I said, freezing but mouse works. And it doesn't kill the machine, because I can go to another computer and ssh into the system just fine. Can also hit the proftp server and push files to it when it is like that. Left it like that overnight just to see if anything happened, but when I got in the next morning, HD was still being hit, but no GNOME. Not sure what the deal is. KDE works fine though, so if you are having a similar problem, try that. Let me know if you come across anything, and vice versa. Good luck, I know I will need it :)
