I have been suffering with Enlightenment all day long now... needlessly tracking down dependencies of dependencies of dependencoies.... so far it's just darn imlib that has me deadlocked... with no luck in sight of ever obtaining the mythical "imlib-config" that the program won't install without. I've downloaded countless rpms, they don't create any files named imlib-config :( . the tarball source won't compile due to God knows what dependencies it wants. For those of you who run Enlightenment please tell me... is it worth all of this pain?

Enlightenment is good, but not worth the amount of hassle that you are having IMHO.
Try fluxbox (http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/) for a window manager with a similar (though obviously not the same) feel as enlightenment.
It is fast and you shouldn't have any real problems installing it, just download the .src.rpm and run rpm --rebuild <fluxbox source rpm> as root. Then install it the usual rpm way.

I'll have to add Blackbox to that recomended list its fast, configurable and looks good too.My window manager preferences have moved from Enlightenment > Sawfish > Windowmaker > Blackbox ( in that order )
Enlightenment is gorgeous but slows things down.

My brother swears by Enlightenment, but I tried it and didn't like it. Personally, I love Waimea (waimea.sourceforge.net). It's highly configurable and light on your system resources. It's built off of blackbox, and can use most blackbox styles. I have never tried blackbox, so I can't tell you what the difference is.

If you are using rpms for the libs (libpng, libimlib, etc) and are trying to compile enlightenment from source, be sure to also install all of the -dev packages for each of the libraries for which E is dependent (EXAMPLE: libpng-dev). Those xxx-config files that the the configure script is looking for live in the -dev package by the same name.
My first experience compiling E (and all its seemingly endless dependencies) was ~ '97 with 0.12.x. I pulled an all-nighter and when E started for the first time I swear I almost had an orgasm. There simply (at that time) was no UI on any OS as graphical and stunning. It was a great Linux Landmark for me and I hope you see it through just for the experience.
I suppose you have your reasons for wanting to build E vs. installing the packages... that's not my affair. (I happen to prefer to build my KDE and Qt from CVS instead of using available debs.)

i love e, its all i use there was something about imlib im trying to remember, i think i had to sym link something there. i went to the irc channel and asked the creators, they give a little lip but you get a quick answer.
God, don't bring back bad memories of Enlightment.

emerge Enlightenment
That was easy, wasn't it? :D
Seriously, I found that Enlightenment wasn't that great. The medu editing format is rather haphazard comparied to Fluxbox, and that stupid desktop-switching-by-moving-the-
mouse-off-the-fscking-screen-option is annoying as all hell. (I know you can change it, but still...)
I'd go with Fluxbox. It's light, easy to use, and looks purdy.
