Okey...
I've figured out how to do this in all the other gnome apps EXCEPT the Nautilus file browser.
How do I turn off the text under the icons?
My apologies for asking such a simple dumb question, but hey I AM the Ignorant Newbie...

I'm not a Gnome/Nautilus user though I would imagine that option (if available) would be somewhere in the configuration options under the toolbar menus.

Go under the "settings" menu (or "preferences" - something like that).

I forget where it is precisely, but somewhere there's a look-and-feel section that has three dropdown menus that tell nautilus what to display under the icons.

You might need to turn on "Advanced" under the settings menu, if it doesn't show up.

heheheheh.. I tired running Nautilus under fluxbox... I was suddenly transported to the Gnome desktop with the fluxbox style still active. heheheh.. no task bars and no way to access the rightclick menus from fluxbox, I got the gnome one instead. I was forced to log out :(

I thought Gnome apps were compatible with fluxbox?

Edit -> preferences -> performance -> Show text in icons set to never

carrja99: By default Nautilus is is used to draw the gnome desktop itself. So if you start Nautilus in fluxbox with this option still turned on, it will draw the desktop. To turn off (in nautilus)

Edit -> preferences -> Desktop & Trash -> uncheck Use Nautilus to draw desktop
