Hi Matt.

A ping of the address listed for your NS comes back, but I don't get resolution when I try to ping it by name. A dig doesn't find it either, but I don't know if that's a limitation of dig and the domain extensions it supports.

The only thing I see that doesn't look right is in your SOA -- I think that needs to be a fully qualified host name. As you can see, we also fully qualify our NS records. Don't know if that will really matter, but it's the only thing I can come up with. Very pared down copy of our zone record follows...

Linda

ok so what is the fully qualified hostname??

if i set the hostname of my server to digiserv.thedigitaldream.co.uk and then type that in my SOA in my dns records will that be correct???

also looking at your dns entries, it seems that you have to also put your name servers in the address records. is that correct?

so if i give my registrar say srv1.thedigitaldream.co.uk 81.97.225.82

do i make an address record that points srv1.thedigitaldream.co.uk to its ip?

cheers

--ok so what is the fully qualified hostname??--
The FULL name of the server, including domain. In my case, ns1.meridian-ds.com is the fully qualified name. It's "host name" (at least to me) is just ns1.

--if i set the hostname of my server to digiserv.thedigitaldream.co.uk and then type that in my SOA in my dns records will that be correct???--
The way I understand it, yes.

--also looking at your dns entries, it seems that you have to also put your name servers in the address records. is that correct?--
Correct, although we may have them in there for some other reason. That was all configured before I started. DNS servers also must be registered with the Internic. I just added a new one for us last week, it's just another type of registration. I did mine through Tucows, for whom we're a reseller. You can also register them through Network Solutions. Not sure where you register them for .uk domains.

--so if i give my registrar say srv1.thedigitaldream.co.uk 81.97.225.82
do i make an address record that points srv1.thedigitaldream.co.uk to its ip? --
Not sure, but I don't think it will hurt anything for you to try it.

ok thanx for your help.

one more thing.

do i set my hostname on my redhat machine to just digiserv or digiserv.thedigitaldream.co.uk???

and also, the hostname has nothing to do with what i give my registrar does it???

for example if the fully qualified hostname of my server is digiserv.thedigitaldream.co.uk

i can give my registrar these details

srv1.thedigitaldream.co.uk xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
srv2.thedigitaldream.co.uk xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

as long as i make name server records for them, pointing srv1.thedigitaldream.co.uk to its ip number and the same for srv2.thedigitaldream.co.uk

thanx

I'm lost...Please explain why you need to full name?
Shouldn't it just be:
www IN A 81.97.225.82
mail IN A 81.97.225.82
srv1 IN NS 81.97.225.8

do i just right the short names?

The short names work fine in the A records. The main place I was thinking of needing the fully qualified name in Matts config was in the SOA.

Please, anyone who knows better jump in here and tell me if I'm way off track...
