I can't believe I am asking this, but...
what's the easiest way to tell which versio on gnome you have running?

I am running debial woody and did an apt-get install gnome whatever about a month ago now....
I have a sneaky suspicion that I am not running gnome2 which is what I want. If that is the case, what's the easiest way with Debian to upgrade to gnome2??

I'd look for the dpkg which has gnome in the filename.... usually the version is listed as part of the name. dselect, apt might also tell you the version.

I have woody and I'm sure it is GNOME 1.4
I think you can upgrade through GNOME but I don't know how because I actually can't get my X-Server running.....

It'll be GNOME 1.4 - GNOME2 isn't even in unstable yet although you can get .debs for it. Look on gnome.org for the debian links. The gnome-control-center should tell you what version you are running. To check dpkg for what gnome related packages are installed you can use:

dpkg -l | grep gnome
