Hi, Just wondering how many hits it would take to significantly slow down network performance on an apache webserver running on Mandrake 8? The server is behind a firewall. The internet connection is a dsl modem. Hope this is enough info. ( I'm only looking for a rough idea).

Thanks

Well, it really depends on the hardware -- but most likely the answer is "More than your DSL connection can handle."

i've had a linux server i built handle up to several million hits a day.

As Elf said, it really does depend on what hardware you are running the server on.

fyi, this was definetly NOT on a dsl connection :)

For the record ...

idiot server coughing up banner ads (385px by 100px, average of 4200bytes per) at a rate of 125,000 per day, using a controlling mysql database to keep the banners aligned with the referrer, ran on a PII 700, 256Mb ram, 80Gb Maxtor UDMA 100 with 100Mb full duplex link out to a paired set of t3's ... never cracked a serious sweat ... average load was appx .85 to 1.05 .... Ram usage got outta hand once in a while but ... swaps were remarkably rare...
