I'm trying to set up an ftp and http server trying to use proftpd for the ftp server. I am pretty clueless about permisions and groups and all that stuff, so when I try and give permision so I can get into my var dir from a non root user, apache doesn't work.
Also, I can't seem to figure out how proftpd works. What I would like to do is be able to ftp into my http server directory (using a password) to work in there.

can ANYONE at least offer ANY advise at least about users and groups and such, even if it is simply pointing me to a good article on the subject.

I dunno about ftp servers, I've had trouble with them myself.

An easy way to set it up to goto your web page directory, is once you set up apache, just delete the normal folder for ftp, and symlink it to /var/www

Best guesses for help would be http://www.google.com/linux and the man page

I'm a total newbie, but somehow I got proftpd working. I just followed the INSTALL instructions, configured my Xinetd service, and its up and running now. What's the problem you're having with proftpd? How far did you get with the installation?

my major problems are with getting it to go into the apache directory rather than the standard ftp server dir. and i also thought that proftpd ran seperately from xinetd.

just to clarify, that ftpserver problem really isn't that important at the time, i just threw it in since i was posting anyway.

I guess I am really looking for something or someone that can explain the way permisions are set up, that is my major problem at the moment, and all I am getting is snotty comments about my other problem.
