I am trying to install Debian 3 with the bf24 installation becuase I want the 2.4 kernel and it seemed easier than updating the kernel. I realize this may or may not be true, but either way I'm trying the bf24 installation.

The problem is, with the standard installation Debian asked if I was on a DHCP server and then auto-configured it for me and connected on startup every time. Very cool.

The bf24 installation, however, does not ask this question and does not auto-configure or connect. This creates some installation issues with trying to download security updates and connect to the package servers. The immediate suggestion I'm sure would be just to update the kernel instead but I have seen a few other people who have this issue when they update to the 2.4 kernel and they had yet to fix the problem either.

So in summary, I need the 2.4 kernel and DHCP working. I'm open to virtually any reasonable stable and sane way of accomplishing this. Thanks in advance. ;)

do a normal install and just install the 2.4 kernels or do an upgrade. Debian includes the 2.4.x kernel now i think

And this will maintain the settings for the DHCP I assume?

the dhcp settings should be seperate from the kernel. As long as you get them running with the normal install, once you upgrade to the 2.4.x you should run fine :)

I just - I think successfully - updated my kernel to 2.4.18 but as I feared I now have no internet. I tried to watch carefully as it booted and I saw something about /eth0 (which is what my NIC was known as when I could get on....) and then it said no such device.

Any help on resolving this?

Hey, atleast its a nice common problem. :)

What nic do you have, it seems like that your probably installed the wrong drivers.

I've got the 3c905c-tx, but have abandoned Debian and went with Red Hat 7.3, which works fine with the 2.4.10-3 kernel and my network. Don't know why exactly, but no worries here.

Actually, I do plan to - as a Linux pro on campus said - "take off the training wheels" - once I'm comfortable with Linux stuff in general and move either back to Debian or to Slack. I know three other guys who use Slack and they say they've tried tons of distros but prefer Slack. I figure it wouldn't be a bad idea to go with Slack since I'll be able to ask them as well as you guys here.
