with some login managers, it doesnt allow you to log in as root. Try logging in as a normal user and then 'su'ing to root.

you mentioned second :-D

Try to log in as a normal user and not as root.

su is a cli (command line interface) command that allows you to run commands as root ( superuser, administrator in win2k )

Also for sugaman since he has posted the same question in Technical.

I've heard that disabling power management in the bios can fix the logon problem.

I checked that in the Bios and it all was turned off went back into RH 8.0 and same thing happend. I wish I could get around this I really want to try Linux out the bug has bit me now. I would hate to not be able to use it this is the second time first I tryed mandrake and it did install but all the text on each menu did'nt have any background and would all blend in together. So I took it off and install RH now I can't get past the login in thing should I try SuSe?

Hi,

It is possible your password file is corrupt. Before reloading again try booting in single user mode.

If you are using LILO, you can enter single-user mode by typing linux single at the LILO boot: prompt.

or Graphical LILO-> [Ctrl]-[x] to exit the graphical screen and go to the boot: prompt):

boot:linux single

passwd

enter your new root password - reboot and give it a try

Will I have tried all Let me give a full account of what's going on maybe then someone can tell me what to do.

First im installed RH 8.0.94 and installed with GRUB bootloader so when I boot it asked for selection of OS's Dos or Linux RH when I chose Dos XP loads just fine as I am typing this on it now. When I chose RH it loads Linux the screen gose black and you see everything loading I get a ton a OK's then it goes to a screen that has Redhat Version 8.0.94....Kernel 2.4.20-248 on a i686.... Localhost Login if at this screen I type Richard which is my username and the password I use during setup it comes back incorrect doit again same thing over and over. If at that screen I do nothing just wait then it goes into a Light Blue screen with the Little Red Hat Man at the top and the box with Localhost/Localdomain overit and wants a user name so I type the same username and password then it does the same thing saying username or password incorrect over and over. I don't see any promt that people are talking about where are to type startx to load XDM geezzzz I know im a Newbie lol but is it that hard? I just want to get in and learn it. If it will be nice enough to let me :-)

You do need to wait for the second login screen (the pretty one)
When you installed linux, you had to type in a root password twice.

Try login username: root
password: The root password

Yep that did it but I had to go in the first screen under root and change passwd then went to the pretty screen and type root and new passwd and I was in :-) Now if I could just get on the internet so I could download some drivers for my
A7N8X Deluxe and RH 8.0

What i feel is a good practice to create a normal user account during the setup only. Just below where u put ur root password twice, there is a button for adding new user.
Working with root login is dangerous. Also login as normal and then change to root only when the need arise.
