I have now got two Linux distro's running - Mandrake 8.2 on a 733 Celeron, RH7.3 on a 1.3 ADM Duron. The machines are similarly spec'ed with 256RAM each, except the Duron has DDR RAM.
Anyway, the performance of the Mandrake 8.2/ Celeron is impressive.
But the RH7.3, on the faster PC? Tux Racer gives about one animation frame a second!!
What's going on?

Now you say in your subject line that RH7.3 is slow. Is the only criteria that you base this statement on the fact that TuxRacer is slow? If so then there is some problem with the 3D settings in your RH machine. If other applications are slow as well then there may be other problems.
I am sorry that I cannot offer advice on setting up your 3D settings but I thought that clearing up whether this is a problem with the entire system or just with 3D would help someone else help you.

Tuxracer uses OpenGL, if this is not setup it will run incredibly slow. What kind of video card do you have?
You were probally just lucky that Mandrake was able to setup OpenGL for you...

hello!
this is not true in all cases. you've mentioned everything about your hardware - _except_ your video card.
tux racer should work on openGL: check out your system configuration. there's a possibility that redhat wasn't able to probe properly your video card.

I didn't mention the cards because they are indentical - Riva TNT2 32M RAM
I should add that performance is slower in other areas, not just graphics - loading Mozilla, opening OpenOffice etc.

Video cards on the two PCs are the same.

See my other replies - video cards are idendical on the two PCs.
Performance is noticeable slower in other areas, not just graphics - loading Mozilla, opening OpenOffice etc.

You really should install the NVidia driver . Im assuming that NVidia has an updated driver for the TNT . Redhats hardware support is a little behind Mandrake , at least on video cards (from my experience) . Sorry I cant help any more than that , I have a Radeon . You might also try hdparm and see if your hard drive is optimized in RedHat . Typically they dont set DMA or IRQ unmasking .

Maybe the obvious option is to go with Mandrake :-)
Certainly it's installation process seemed more 'complete' to this linuxnewbie.
Thanks everyone.

Is the boot process and opening all apps slow?
If so, then try adding your hostname to /etc/hosts as
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost <your hostname>
Also look into using hdparm. There are previous thread here that can help, a NHF on the subject and plenty of tutorials etc. on the web.

There appears to be no significant difference during the boot phase.
If so, then try adding your hostname to /etc/hosts as
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost <your hostname>
That checks out OK on both boxes. Looks like the installs sorted it out.
Anyway, as stated earlier, easier to go with Mandrake at this point as I am still feeling my way.
