use WineX from transgaming.

One thing though, WineX is not free if you dont wanna compile it yourself however it IS free if you choose to compile it from CVS.

CVS being the free server that hosts the nightly builds of what developers work on daily so your getting fresh source code which could be buggy.

AFAIK, The Sims doesn't run under wine or winex. You have to buy Tran$gaming's "port"

Yup, Your Windows copy of the Sims is a coaster in Linux...At least they finally seperated the game from that Mandrake 8.2 it originally had to come with :)

I heard that Transgaming won't merge the version of winex that runs The Sims back into the public release, so it's "buy our copy, or don't play it at all"

I don't believe The Sims runs on Winex but is a port. If it was WineX running it, you'd think it would be able to run the add-ons...which it does not.

No. Unfortunately to make The Sims run under Linux Transgaming Technologies had to make some substantial changes to the original source code. This change makes it impossible to run The Sims for Windows under WineX
Substantial changes of source code to make it compatable with Linux sure sounds like a port to me...unless there is another definition of 'port' that I don't know about;)

Or maybe this clued me into thinking it's a port and doesn't use WineX...

Installing The Sims does not install WineX. To get the most current version of WineX log into our website and download the most current binary from our downloads section.

It's not a port, the windows code has been manipulated to be compatible with WineX

Hello

TransGaming version of The Sims for Linux does use the WineX layer to
run. You do not need to have WineX installed as it has been integrated
with The Sims for Linux.

Kind of wierd, but that's how it goes...I was wrong, it's not a 'true port' but more or less a tweaked out version of the game with WineX.
