I just installed Mandrake 8.2 duel booted with Win XP home and everything works good except that my SoundBlaster Audigy did not get installed with the installation. Problem is - when I go to HardDrake to install it, the screen goes blank and the computer freezes when it begins searching for hardware (don’t remember the screen name).
The computer is overclocked (1400@1796) but I still have the same problem when I set it to default values so don’t think that is a factor. Any ideas?
Any help greatly appreciated, Bill :(

I am using 8.2 and I used 'sndconfig' in an xterm session as root to configure my sound.

Sounds good ( I guess:D) but what in the heck is " an xterm session as root " and how do I do that?
Would still like to know why the puter dies in HardDrake.
Thanks, Bill

When the machine starts up you are presented with a logon screen. Type in 'root' for the userid and the password for that id. Open an xterm window and then type 'sndconfig'. If you don't have it installed you will have to go to the mandrake package manager and install it.

OK - I logged into root, and after the dire warnings that the earth would come to an end if I didn’t breath just right, I ended up with a Home Window with a red background. Don’t see anyplace to enter the “sndconfig”. I tried in “Open location” but got nowhere. So - how do I open an xterm window (and what is that)?
Appreciate your patience, Bill

Not a problem, dire warnings are a good thing when you log on as root. My default logon is to Gnome on root. At the bottom of my screen I have a number of options. If you move your mouse over each one a popup should appear. What you are looking for is 'Terminal of the Gnome desktop'. From there you can launch sndconfig.
If you don't have sndconfig you will have to find MandrakeUpdate. (Configuration, Packaging). Be a bit patient, it will then bring up a dialog for Mandrake Update, press the Cancel option. The 'Installable' option should be present. Fill the after find 'sndconfig' and press 'search'. When it finds the package click the little box on the right and then at the top click on the 'Install/Remove' icon. After it is done you can then try sndconfig. As to why HardDrake locks I am unsure.
There may be an easier way, but, I am still learning about Linux myself.... Beats Win95/98 any day though... I am running a P200 and Win98 crawled, under Linux it is as fast as the boys P800 gaming machine on email, spreadsheets and music playing!
