hey guys, glad i found this forum.

anyway, i picked up this old 100mhz pentium server. its an HP Netserver 5/100 LM and im having probs installing mandrake on it!

i have the boot disk, and the 3 cd's and i boot to the disk, then it proceeds to the first step of installation (not graphical yet), it says its going to the 2nd, then it says installation aborted abnormally or something like that. and then says i need to restart. i have a SCSI HD and a SCSI CDROM device, when it prompts for the correct SCSI driver i point it to the Adaptec 7xxx one since thats the one i have.....what am i doing wrong? would a different distro be best...?

Does the P100 and the memory meet or exceed the minimum requirements for Mandrake 8.2?

What is the exact error message?

when it fails it does this:

in second stage install
install exited abnormally :-(
sending termination singnals...done
sending kill signals...done
unmounting filesystems...
/proc
/tmp/image
/tmp/stage2
you may safely reboot your system

this is after "loading program into memory"

i havn't checked if 100mhz is enough for mandrake, i thought that it would be sufficiant since it is linux....?

Mandrake 8.2 would roughly be the same as installing W2K on the same pc.

How much memory does it have?

64mb EDO, its in SIMM's i checked with some docs. i may be able to upgrade to 32mb's sticks x 2 and make it 128 total, but ill prolly have to change some jumper settings, im not sure if it can do 128mb. (and the speed may be too fast, it cannot take anything faster than 70ns)

Is the minimum memory requirement 128mb for Mandrake 8.2?

If so, then you will either need to add another 64mb or change distros or get a earlier version of Mandrake.

Are you planning to use your HP box as a workstation or webserver, router etc.?

http://old.lwn.net/Distributions/ is very handy for checking out most if not all of the available distros. Some are only meant for specific tasks.

well i fixed it by installing debian, i did the net install and followed the directions. only problem is i cant get X to start. somethings up with the video, its an onboard video with 512k of memory, talk about old. but NT4 was running on these machines before, so i know the video does work. how do i get X to run? i type startx and it has a problem.....anything that will fix this, how do i reconfigure my settings? (so far i can do bash, and SSH is messed up)

There are quite a few X configuration tools you can use as you can probably see in all the X related threads posted here.

xf86config
xf86cfg (for X4)
