Okay. A couple of days ago i posted a question about how to get on my school's network, and now im just saying screw the network! I just want the internet!!! So...I am now asking how to get on the internet from my school network. I am network illiterate, so please dont expect me to know a bunch of complicated stuff about ip routers or dns subnet masks and stuff like that. Like I said before, I went to the internet connection wizard in the Mandrake Control Center and put in all of my settings and i went into galleon and it told me that it couldnt connect. (something like that). soooo....any help would be greatly appreciated. Oh..and no troll pictures on this post please.

For dial-up:
I'm going to assume your running KDE. In the terminal type "kppp". Hit enter. Alternately go to Start Menu>Internet>WWW>kppp(internet dialer). If you've set one up in windows, it's a snap.

Don't run Galeon, but are you trying to run it from a network or regular dial-up?

You just want to configure your browser to get on the internet, correct? Does your network use a firewall? Then you'll need to go into the "Settings" menu>Preferences>Advanced>Network. You might try automatic setting if you don't know the proxies.

Then you'll have to follow the path outlined in my post above. If it doesn't work in the auto setting you'll have to get the numbers to plug-in from your system administrator.

Are you aware that bypassing your schools firewall is Illegal? It is there for a reason .....to keep script kids out!! Does not matter what your reason is, you should not ask any one here to help you do an Illegal and dangerous act like that....... does any one out there disagree???

That's why I suggested he contact his system administrator. The system administrator is in charge of the system and he'll make the proper decision.

NO!!! you misunderstand. the firewall here keeps outside people out of our system, but we can get on the internet. I am on it right now from my xp partition, just want to set my linux so that I can access the internet from linux. by the way...what the hell is a script kid?

If you are on any sort of network and want to get out to the Internet, you will have to know at least a few pieces of information concerning the network you are on in order to communicate over that network to access the Internet. In other words, because the school's network is your path to the Internet, you can't "just screw the network"; you need to be correctly connected to it before you can connect to the Internet.
Since you aren't familiar at all with networking concepts, you should really take JohnT's advice and contact someone in your system administration department. It is part of their job to help you get connected, so why not take advantage of their resources? That's what part of your tuition is paying for after all.
It would also be a good idea to find a fellow student who is network and Linux savy, and ask them to help you out. There are a few reasons why this might be a better/faster way (than posting here) to solve your problem:
A) Not being familiar with networking concepts, you aren't able to give us the information that we will need to help you.
B) We aren't sitting at your computer, so we can't discern for ourselves where the problem lies. Considering the fact that we don't even know how you physically plug your computer in to the campus network, helping you from our various remote locations becomes rather difficult, yes? I mean, we don't even know if your computer's network card is correctly configured under Linux, let alone your network settings.
C) A fellow network-savy friend could "talk geek" with the campus system admins, understand what they tell him/her, and get the information you need from them.
D) Said network-savy friend could probably just look at the network settings you use in XP and translate that information to your Linux setup.
Unfortunately, if you want us to help troubleshoot the problem instead, you really will have to supply us with some of the gory technical details. We simply can't help solve the problem without knowing certain things about your setup; trying to do so would just be shooting in the dark.

Maybe one of the networking NHFs (http://linuxnewbie.org/nhf/Networks) or the networking HOWTOs (http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/networking.html) would help.
